From DAWN to DUSK

In this article i’m going to discuss about the storage medium. These are the external storage devices used for storing data. The storage devices mentioned in this article are not arranged in a sequential manner.

The above mentioned external devices played & still playing an  important role in the field of technology.

Paper Punch Card

Paper Punch cards was used as the first external storage device. Those days Programmers used to punch the card for providing input. They used Printers to punch the output for storage.

Magnetic Tape

Magnetic tapes invented in mid 70’s & has been used for data storage for over 50 years. As of 2008, the highest capacity tape cartridges (Sun StorageTek T10000B, IBM TS1130) can store 1 TB of data without using compression.

Floppy Disk

The floppy disks was invented at IBM, were 8 inches in diameter & was commercially available in 1971. Later  5¼- and 3½-inch floppys became very popular. But the storage capacity was 1.44MB.

Disk Plates

Later,  Floppies were replaced by CD, DVD (Digital Versatile Disc or Digital Video Disc)

Compact Disc (also known as a CD) is an optical disc used to store digital data. It was originally developed to store sound recordings, but later it also allowed the preservation of other types of data. Audio CDs have been commercially available since October 1982.

DVD, was invented in 1995  also known as Digital Versatile Disc or Digital Video Disc, It is an optical disk storage media format.

Pen Drive

Trek Technology and IBM began selling the first USB flash drives commercially in 2000. The storage capacity ranges between 64 MB to 256 GB. The 256 GB pendrive was launched in the year 2009 by the company named Kingston. This technlogy rules the current world.

Micro SD

SD is an acronym for secure digital. The cards are commonly used in cellular phones, as well as in handheld GPS devices, portable media players, digital audio players, expandable USB flash memory drives, Nintendo DSflashcarts, and digital cameras.

The microSD format was originally created by SanDisk. It was originally called T-Flash, and then TransFlash, before being renamed microSD when adopted by the SD Card Association(SDA).

microSD specification was announced on July 13, 2005. At launch, the microSD format was available in capacities of 32, 64, and 128 MB. At present, microSD cards are available upto 8GB.

External Hard Drive

It was launched in recent years, it is portable & can hold large amount of data. The storage capacity ranges from 160GB to 4GB.

In 2020, the storage capacity will increase to PB. A unit of information equal to 1024 tebibytes or 2^50 bytes/A unit of information equal to 1000 terabytes or 10^15 bytes.

LET’s ALL LEAN FORWARD FOR THE UPCOMING TECHNOLOGY :)
